Choosing the Right Lighting for Your Home
June 13, 2025Electrical panels have an average lifespan of 25 to 40 years, but whenever we move houses, we may not always know how old the electrical panel is. If you notice any of these common signs, your electrical panel may need to be replaced.
Consistently Tripping Breakers: Aside from the inconvenience of breakers constantly tripping, this is a common sign that your electrical panel has worn down to the point of being susceptible to power surges and cannot handle the output required for the entire property. If you need to reset your breakers more than a few times a week, then it’s time to upgrade your electrical panel.
Flickering Lights: If certain rooms have flickering lights, it may be a sign that there is too much electricity flowing through one circuit. A remedy for this may be to add more circuits, if possible. However, if this doesn’t work or can’t be done, you should consult with an electrician to replace and upgrade your panel to include more space for more circuits.
Damaged Wires or Breakers: Finding melted wires and burnt breakers indicates your electrical panel is overheating as it tries to meet the electrical demands of the household, which increases the risk of an electrical fire.
An outlier to these common signs is home renovations or modern appliance additions to your home. With modern appliances and massive home renovations, including room additions, the extra energy required can present more strain on your current electrical panel than it may be able to handle. If you’re unsure whether you need to replace your electrical panel or not, you can contact a local electrician for a professional opinion.
